Retired and widowed Gloriana Jones is forging on with the plans she and her late husband dreamed of—bringing joy and happiness, one ice cream cone at a time, to Lake Unami. But bad weather is drowning her dream. A trip to Upstate NY is bittersweet for Nathan James. He is excited to see his first granddaughter but without his wife he’s lonely. When his car breaks down, he heads to the only light he can see, an ice cream shop. With aid from a heavenly source, electricity sparks, but will the two weather the summer storms and find love a second time? Or will their hopes and dreams melt away?

Excerpt from Rainbow Sprinkles

“Dad, what are you doing here?” Lacey blinked at him when she opened the door.

“Can’t I visit my favorite daughter?”

“I’m your only daughter. And you didn’t say you were coming.” She stepped back into the foyer. “Come on in. I’m getting the baby ready for a bath.”

He followed her through the house toward the kitchen, stopping by the family room to get the cooing baby from her playpen. “Who’s that?”

“Funny, dad.” Lacey tossed her ponytail over her shoulder. “Say hi to grandpa.”

Adele burped and spurted some milk in return.

“When I left, there was this tiny wrinkled infant who never opened her eyes.” Said infant now looked up at him with big bluish-gray eyes and ringlets of red hair. “She was bald too.”

Dad.” Lacey scowled at him then turned a mamma’s so in love with you look on her daughter. “Don’t listen to him. You are now, and have from day one, been beautiful.”

Eyes misting, Nathan reached out and cupped two cheeks. “You’re both the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen.”

“Thanks.”

In the kitchen, the usually cleared counters were loaded with powders, lotions, diaper boxes, and things he had not a clue as to the name. “Looks like a baby store exploded in here. Where’s the coffee pot?”

“Behind the car seat.”

While the coffee brewed, he watched Lacey with Adelle. “You seem very competent at being a mother.”

“Some days are better than others.” She rinsed shampoo off the little one’s head. “I have a lot of support from other service wives and the church. Don’t think I’ve cooked a meal since she was born.”

The smells of the soap and shampoo brought back memories of Rachel with Lacey. Words caught in his throat. “You remind me so much of your mother.”

“Highest compliment you can give me.” She set the baby on the changing table and patted her dry, taking time between each toe and finger. “So, what brings you north?”

“I…I’m going to ask Gloriana to marry me.”

Lacey looked over her shoulder with a raised brow. One side of her mouth lifted. “What happened to go slow?”

Nathan got up and began to pace. “I don’t want to go slow. I want to marry that woman, but I’m afraid of scaring her off by telling her.” He ran a hand over his head. “For crying out loud, I’m almost fifty. Why should I wait? Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed. We should take today and tomorrow, and all the time we have, and live.”

“Maybe you should tell her that.”

“I’m scared, Lace.” He went to the back door and stared out. “What if she says no?”

“Does she love you?”

“Yeah. She does.”

“Then, Dad, why are you wasting the precious time you have with me?” Lacey took his arm and turned him around. “Life is hard. Love is harder. I miss Matt every day. He’s coming home soon. But now wouldn’t be soon enough.” Her eyes filled with tears. “Don’t you waste one more day being afraid.”

The tears overflowed and ran down her cheeks, and Nathan pulled her into his arms. “How’d you get to be so smart?”

“It must be from my mother.” She sniffed. “My dad’s kind of a goof.”

“Yeah, he is.”
